End of season 2….

It has been great to do all these LIVE Fly tying Fridays again, even though have had less episodes this season. It has been a pretty rough and tough winter for a lot us and what has been going on in the world makes everyone more cautious. For us it has been ups and downs, sick on and off and getting Covid for a second time. So there has been parts with this season that suffered, for example the weekly updates and YouTube. But we will get back on track and all episodes will come shortly.

Tellis Flugfiske will be the only sponsor this year around!

Why? Because I truly believe that this cause it worth it and I hope more of you do to. This year I am also arranging the fishing show “Havsöringens dag” on the 19th of March, where all donations will go to conservation organizations around Gothenburg.

The second episode of “season 2” is the classic Red butt fly and a more modern version of it called Fire butt (Glödhäck in Swedish). I think this fly together with Sunray Shadow is one of the most common flies in most salmon anglers fly box. My personal best in Norway, or Atlantic salmon, is caught in River Laerdal on the red butt tied on a double size 6 whilst fishing for Sea trout, a huge salmon around 13 kilos smashed the small fly and gave me a great fight on my single handed rod. The days before that huge salmon I aslo caught my first ever Sea trout in that river on the same fly. Beside that fish, this fly has given me many memorable moments by the river and was for many years my absolute favorite fly. I would easily recommend this fly to anyone for any kind of “swinging fly fishing”, regardless the species! Its of course a great fly for salmon but also a fantastic fly for sea trout as well, and as noted, several other species.

5th Auction

New year has begun and we continue with our auction donation in 2022.

This is the 1st collected post out of 4, sharing next 4 Friday events, showing what flies will be tied those two fly tying events and also those two tips and tricks that are on schedule for the next 4 Fridays.

Yet another season has passed and we have experienced a lot of new things, as well as being more able to travel during the summer. The fishing season overall here in Scandinavia seems to been a decent one for most of us. We where also able to go to Norway for a few weeks and for most of us that was one of the highlights of the summer! Once again we spent a lot of time in the north of Sweden and fished the baltic rivers. Seeing once again the huge potential these rivers has, the choice for this winters donations was pretty easy. During the first period of time with all these LIVE events, all donations and auctions will be held for The Baltic Salmon fund, you will find more information below. This season we will also have more detailed Tips and Tricks in between the fly tying weeks! With that said, we are glad to be back on a new fly tying season and very glad to see YOU back again!

All LIVE Fly Tying Packages

These times are still a little strange to some or most of us, supporting each other is always needed, both to those we know but also to strangers as much as we can, in any way we can!
So, we decided to choose 2 different organisations, one for every 4 LIVE Fly Tying evenings. Each week we will mention that organisation and tell their story.
Tellis Flugfiske will donate 500 SEK to each organisations chosen!
We chose Stiftelsen för Östersjölaxen as our first organisation.

First 4 LIVE events

See Facebook Event #13 here: LIVE Fly Tying Friday with Tellis Katsogiannos

#13 fly package you can buy here: The Pahtakorva (Phatagorva) fly

The Pahtakorva (Phatagorva) fly is probably one of the most famous patterns for salmon and sea trout. Originally made by Mikael Frödin and is definitely very often thought of as his signum fly. I think all of us has a salmon or two that is caught on this fly. Here is my personal take on his very efficient pattern!

First auction

Åke Magnusson was the winner of the first auction donation and supported Stiftelsen för Östersjölaxen for 500 SEK!
We thank Åke for his generous donation.

See Facebook Event #1 here: Tips & Tricks with Tellis Katsogiannos

Have you ever wondered what hair to choose? Or why sometimes the whole wing just gets tangled in the hook? Choosing the right hairs and structures is key to making the fly swim and behave the way you want! In this episode I will show you how to use different types of hairs for different parts of the fly or different fly patterns.

See Facebook Event #14 here: LIVE Fly Tying Friday with Tellis Katsogiannos

#14 fly package you can buy here: Glödhäck (Fire Butt) & Red Butt flies

The classic Red butt and Fire butt is probably one of the most efficient flies for a lot of different species and over a period of time my absolute favorite. I have caught a lot of “personal bests” with this fly and my largest Norwegian salmon to this day is caught on a size 6 double hook Red butt. In this episode we will have a look on both a more classic version on a double hook and a typical modern tube fly.

See Facebook Event #2 here: Tips & Tricks with Tellis Katsogiannos

Why is the hackle not looking the way you want? How can I get the right length of the fibers? These are just two of the many questions all of us have struggled with as we have learned about fly tying. In this episode I will show you how to choose the right hackle and feathers for the right type of fly and also show how the look of a fly will change dramatically by using a different type of feather!

ALL FLY TYING PACKAGES CAN BE FOUND HERE!

Weekly Collective Post After Each Event

After each LIVE event, a Blog post will be posted few days later with collective content from that event along with video of the fly/flies that was tied.

I think everyone who fishes for salmon and sea trout in the rivers has heard about a fly called Pahtakorva, or Phatagorva as its also called many times. This pattern is one of Mikael Frödins most famous patterns and he is often thought of when people mention this fly. This fly came into my “salmon life” very early and has given me many fine memories through many different variations of it. My largest salmon ever is actually caught on this fly, a huge september salmon from river Mörrum, a fish around 16 kilos! There several different variations and ways to tie this fly and most of them are really great! This is my personal take on Frödins fantastic fly, and I hope you enjoy tying it as much as fishing with it.

Material for 10 Pahtakorva flies can be found HERE!

To show off how well the pattern works, here are some of those nice catches!

In this post is a collective post with all episodes of season 1 are shown and little details about each fly along with all fly tying videos on YouTube.

#1 The Autumn Fly

The Autumn fly has become one of my true favorites and is has proven itself to fish great in so many times and places. It has even become a favorite, fishing for Steelhead in Deschutes, Oregon!

Fly package #1 you can buy here: The Autumn Fly (Höstflugan)

#2 Monkey Style Flies

Most people has heard of ”The Dee monkey” and I will show you my adaptation of it with a few variations and different materials. These kind off lies works more or less all the time and everywhere.

Fly package #2 you can buy here: Monkey Style flies

#3 Coastal Shrimp Flies

Coastal fishing for sea trout has become one of the most popular form of fly fishing in Scandinavia. The sea running trout has a big appatite and they always love shrimp! I will demonstrate 2 very easy way to tie effective patterns.

Fly package #3 you can buy here: Shrimp flies for Sea trout

#4 The Grey Banana Fly

The Grey banana is just one of those flies that was created without any specific plan or scenario, but it has proven itself many times. The grey in the fly makes it ”dissapear” in the right light conditions and my biggest chromed salmon is caught with this fly

Fly package #4 you can buy here: Grey Banana

#5 Willy Gun/The Usual Dark

Willy Gun/The Usual Dark is a very famous salmon fly that has proven itself, all over the world. Regardless of what you call it, the combination of Black, Orange & Yellow can be found in almost all fly boxes.

Fly package #5 you can buy here: Willy Gun + The Usual Dark

#6 Saltwater Flies

All over the world, saltwater fishing has become extremely popular. Even though these two Saltwater fly patterns that we will tied this time, are thought to be used for tropical fishing, they also work great for catching all predators.

Fly package #6 you can buy here: Saltwater flies

#7 Black & Orange Fly

For you guys who know me, know that this fly is one of my favorite. It can be tied in many variations, but this time it will be tied in more “Scandinavian Style”.

Fly package #7 you can buy here: Black & Orange

#8 Sunray Shadow Variations

Probably the most famous salmon fly in the world and should be in every anglers fly box. Easy to tie and many variations can be tied.

Fly package #8 you can buy here: Sunray Shadow

#9 Green Highlander

The Green Highlander is a very famous pattern for salmon and it has been used for ages. If you look at the colors of the fly, imagine a sunny, bright day along any river as well as even darker and murky waters. Most people would shake their head if you put on a Green Highlander, but I can tell you that they are wrong.

Fly package #9 you can buy here: Green Highlander

#10 Opossum Zonkers

Zonker flies has been around for a very long time and has been used a lot in fishing for different variations of trout. This material has a fantastic shimmer and is very easy to cut and tie with. There is a huge variety of colors and sizes and fits for both trout and salmon flies. The best thing about it is the shimmer, fibers and thin skin.

Fly package #10 you can buy here: Opossum Zonker

#11 Black & Green Helmet

With the bright, amazing green colors of the Black & Green fly match up perfectly with black ,making this fly very easy on the eyes! Most of the times this fly is referred to as a typical “green river fly”, for those crystal clear rivers in Norway. Even though it really fishes great in those rivers, they work really good in humus rivers as well.

Fly package #11 you can buy here: Black & Green Helmet

#12 The Usual (Den Vanliga)

The Usual (Den Vanliga) is a pattern that has its roots in the north of Sweden and has become a well known fly all across Scandinavia. With its color combination it fits perfectly in those peaty, tea colored rivers, and it truly shines when the weather is nice and the sun is out. If you tie it a little bit darker it will be a fly that fishes really good in all conditions.

Fly package #12 you can buy here: The Usual (Den Vanliga)

Supporting amazing work and every penny is worth it

If you are an angler on the coast of Sweden, this is something to support.

As can be seen on Fiskevårdsnätverket Göteborg´s website, that yearly support matters greatly and we have together managed to collect around 50.000 SEK for the organisation the past few years through events like “Havsöringens dag”, a small show that has been arranged for the last 6 years. This year we can not do this due to Covid so we are trying to at least get a little bit through our fly tying events.

Do you want to support conservation work that improves the habitat and spawning grounds for trout?

Those who want to donate to the organization can do so by scanning this QR and Swish to us, then you are in our Lottery pot that will be drawn out on the 26th of February, on our last night of LIVE Fly Tying.

When we work together, we are so much stronger!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
We are so grateful for your participation and generosity.

This pattern has its roots in the north of Sweden and has become a well known fly all across Scandinavia. If you ever go to the rivers in the north, this fly should be in your box! With its color combination it fits perfectly in those peaty, tea colored rivers, and it truly shines when the weather is nice and the sun is out. If you tie it a little bit darker it will be a fly that fishes really good in all conditions. When I started fishing in the river Örekil this was my go-to fly every time. I just loved how it both blended in with the environment but also was “shining” as it came across in sunlight. In my opinion this fly is absolutely perfect for that river!

When I started fishing a little bit more in the north of Sweden I was of course “forced” to use this fly as well. It is like the mighty river Spey, every Spey caster and salmon angler should go there. And if you fish in the north, you should use this fly. It is like an unwritten rule, a sort of spiritual courtesy to the river and history. Take all that aside, you should regardless have this fly in these kind of waters, it is just that good…

Some great catches with The Usual (Den Vanliga)

The Black and Green Helmet was one of my favorite flies and still has a special spot in my box. This pattern is to my knowledge a pattern that no other than Mikael Frödin came up with several years ago. I first got in contact with this pattern about 17 years ago. With the bright, amazing green colors matching up perfectly with black makes this fly very easy on the eyes! Most of the times this fly is referred to as a typical “green river fly”, for those crystal clear rivers in Norway. And, even though it really fishes great in those rivers, they work really good in humus rivers as well. I have caught a lot salmon in this fly in my home river Örekil! But, the reason that this fly always will be special to me, is due to the fact that my first ever salmon over 10 kilos was caught on exactly this pattern! A beautiful 12 kilo salmon and still the biggest one I have caught in river Orkla.

There is like always variations of the different patterns and this fly is no different. As you might have noticed, I very seldom put any effort into the bodies of my flies and I try to focus more on the wing, hackle and shape of the fly. My variations is therefore not identical with Mikael Frödins. He uses body hackle, tag and butt and more, which makes the fly look even better! But that does not necessary mean it is better at catching fish. Regardless of your personal style and taste, you should have a few of these in your fly box!
